or their final project of the year, grade 4 and 5 students explored the fascinating phenomenon of the solstice. As we were approaching the summer solstice here in Jakarta in the southern hemisphere, some students also experienced the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere during their holiday travels.
In a blend of Science and Social Inquiry, we discussed how the tilt of the Earth creates the seasons and leads to the longest and shortest days of the year. To bring this learning to life, students crafted lanterns as a creative interpretation of the light that fills summer or is cherished during winter.
Their thoughtful, painted designs captured the essence of these special times of year, making this project a bright and meaningful way to welcome the new year.
