The French School Jakarta Launches the PARLE and SELO Programs Alongside the American International Section

Starting in the 2025 academic year, the French School Jakarta is enhancing its secondary school language offering by introducing two complementary English-language programs:

  • The PARLE program in middle school, followed by the SELO program in high school
  • The American International Section in both middle and high school

These programs, fully aligned with the multilingual policy of the AEFE network, provide students with a coherent, ambitious, and progressive English-language education — from the beginning of middle school through to the French Baccalaureate.

The PARLE Program: Building a Strong Foundation in Middle School (Comparable to the European Section)

The PARLE program (Parcours Adapté et Renforcé de Langue Étrangère – Adapted and Strengthened Foreign Language Pathway) is designed for all middle school students who are not enrolled in the International Section. Its aim is to strengthen their English skills in an accessible, engaging, and structured environment.

It includes:

  • Enhanced English instruction (1 additional hour) on top of the regular French curriculum (3 to 4 hours of English)
  • Gradual introduction of a non-linguistic subject (DNL) taught in English, such as History-Geography (1 additional hour), in addition to the standard French curriculum (3 to 3.5 hours of History-Geography)

This pathway prepares students to use English confidently in an academic context and serves as a natural stepping stone toward high school excellence programs such as SELO or the International Section (BFI).

The SELO Program: Deepening and Showcasing Language Skills in High School

As a natural continuation of the PARLE program, the European Section in English (SELO) is offered in high school for students who are not enrolled in the International Section. This program helps students further strengthen their command of English while continuing academic instruction partially in English.

The SELO program includes:

  • Advanced English instruction: 1 additional hour per week, in addition to the regular English as a First Foreign Language (LVA) classes (2 to 3 hours as per the French curriculum)
  • A non-linguistic subject (DNL), History-Geography, taught partly in English (1 hour/week), in addition to the 3 hours taught in French

At the end of Terminale, students may earn the official “European Section” distinction on their French Baccalaureate – a highly regarded credential for university applications.

A Structured and Complementary Path to Excellence

Together, the PARLE and SELO programs form a coherent and progressive learning path:

  • PARLE introduces students to reinforced English learning in middle school, laying strong oral and written foundations.
  • SELO builds on this base in high school, consolidating and enhancing those skills through partial bilingual instruction and culminating in official recognition.

This path allows students to develop their English proficiency step by step, in a stimulating linguistic environment, and prepares them effectively for the demands of higher education in France and abroad.

The International Section: A Rigorous Bilingual Path from Middle to High School

The American International Section is available from middle school at the French School Jakarta. It offers a bilingual academic environment that combines advanced English instruction with a rich understanding of Anglophone culture and society.

In Middle School, International Section students benefit from:

  • A non-linguistic subject (DNL) taught in English (History-Geography), covering half of the total curriculum time (1.5 hours in French + 1.5 hours in English)
  • 4 hours of American Literature, in addition to the 3 to 4 hours of LVA English included in the French curriculum

In High School, the International Section prepares students for the French International Baccalaureate (BFI) – a demanding and internationally recognized diploma.

The BFI program includes:

  • In Seconde (Grade 10):
    • 2 hours of DNL History-Geography in English (plus 2 hours in French)
    • 4 hours of American Literature (in addition to 3 hours of LVA English)
  • In Première and Terminale (Grades 11 and 12):
    • 2 hours of DNL History-Geography in English (plus 2 hours in French)
    • 2 hours of cultural and linguistic enhancement
    • 2 hours of “world knowledge” studies
(all in addition to the 2 hours of LVA English in the standard curriculum)

This pathway is designed for motivated and curious students with strong English skills, who are seeking a high-level bilingual education. It provides excellent preparation for university studies both in France and internationally.

A Strong Commitment to Multilingualism and International Openness

By offering these two pathways, the French School Jakarta affirms its mission to develop multilingual, globally minded students with strong linguistic and cultural competencies. These programs meet the needs of both French-speaking and international families, while aligning with the expectations of higher education institutions in France and abroad.
